"Let's reclaim motherhood!" Strange slogans on the lips of women, since motherhood today tends to be presented and experienced as a burden, a legacy to be freed from. On the other hand, biotechnologies, through the segmentation of the reproductive process, transform the human experience (physical, mental, psychological) of motherhood into products to be marketed. Conversely, precisely because, for the first time in history, women (at least in the West) have achieved total autonomy and can choose to be mothers, there is a concrete possibility of contextualizing motherhood within the realm of freedom, inaugurating a different approach. A precious text for those who feel we are living through a pivotal moment in our understanding of motherhood and the meaning of the word freedom.

This work explores the diverse representations of the tropes of motherhood and freedom—figures that this author inextricably links to women's issues—in order to analyze how, as a leading feminist theorist of the early 20th century, she negotiated and engaged with the dominant discourse on gender. The trajectory of Martínez Sierra's feminist thought reveals how one of the most important theorists of Spanish feminism sought to reconceptualize the key figure in the discourse of domesticity, the mother, and grappled with the complex notion of freedom for women.
