
Jakucho Setouchi (瀬戸内 寂聴 Setouchi Jakuchō?), formerly Harumi Setouchi (瀬戸内 晴美 Setouchi Harumi?) (Tokushima, Empire of Japan, May 5, 1922 – Kyoto, Japan, November 9, 2021) was a Japanese bhikkhuni (fully ordained Buddhist nun), writer, and activist. She was best known for her first-person biographical novels.
She was born in Tokushima into a family that sold religious goods. She enrolled at the Tokyo Women's Christian University and graduated with a degree in Japanese Literature. She married an exchange student sent to Beijing by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She returned to Japan in 1946 with her daughter. After having an affair with one of her students, she left her husband and obtained a divorce. He then went to Tokyo to dedicate himself to writing.
