My Individualism (1914), Sōseki's most famous essay, marked a turning point in the evolution of early 20th-century Japanese thought and gave rise to a new Japanese intellectual class grounded in individual freedom and a progressive mindset. For the first time, four of Sōseki's most representative essays are published in Spanish, an anthology of short texts based on private reflections and public lectures by the father of the modern Japanese novel and a central figure in 20th-century Japanese literature.
My Individualism and Other Essays vindicates Sōseki as a mediator between cultures, a conciliator between East and West, and an example of how, beyond conflict, universal commonalities across all cultures are the necessary foundation upon which to build mutual understanding and self-knowledge.
