Like the poet herself, much of her work remained hidden while she lived, tucked away in the back of a trunk at the foot of her bed. It wasn't until her death that the nearly 2,000 poems she wrote were discovered in the most unusual formats—some in hand-sewn notebooks and others on the back of discarded scraps of paper—all composed in a fractured grammar, full of lines, crosses, and variants, anomalous capitalization. For six decades, her poetry was circulated in partial and retouched versions, and it wasn't until 1955 that a complete and restored edition of her work was published in English.
