One of the central themes in Pragmatism is the notion of truth, closely linked to that of justification. A sound justification is understood as one based on the best possible reasons at a given historical moment and in relation to the appropriate context. What constitutes the best possible reasons? And how do we know when we have reached the point where, in fact, there are no more reasons that contradict the validity of our justifications? Good reasons would show that, within a context of certain social practices, these could be considered successful interventions in the world. Thus, the notion of truth is linked to processes of justification, but also to reality. In the process of justification, observing the actual consequences in contrast to the intended consequences yields information that demonstrates the sufficiency of the reasons on which a decision is based. Our best reasons are contingent; what we consider valid today may be modified later in relation to other information, other contexts, and other audiences. Our justifications are therefore transitory, and we lack a limiting criterion that precisely indicates when we have reached “the best possible reasons” for considering a belief or a certain decision intersubjectively acceptable. This epistemological and ontological stance has ethical and political implications. In this book, we present some of these implications in relation to human rights, complex systems, and the issue of uncertainty and vulnerability in decision-making.
