The Employees, originally published in 1838 under the title The Superior Woman, depicts the struggle between the wives (superior women) of two employees who aspire to rise within the same ministry.
The Little Bourgeois is one of Balzac's novels that he could not finish. Published posthumously in Brussels in 1854, it reflects like few others the life of the society of the middle class of the time. Many retired characters from the previous novel reappear, and the story continues with the question of the superior woman.
