In the 1970s, a group of women, led by Ina May Gaskin, initiated a movement to change traditional methods of childbirth. They toured rural Tennessee in a bus caravan to share their knowledge of childbirth and motherhood with other women, and began attending their births without the need for institutions, hospitals or doctors. Since then, Ina May has witnessed more than a thousand births in its popular birthplace, "La Granja", but there are much more matrons, families, doctors and students she has illuminated with her books, publications and conferences worldwide.
