Can the pedagogical techniques learned in the books be transferred to the classroom? What happens when the theory a teacher studied clashes with the reality of his students? How to avoid the anger and frustration of a teacher who tried all the recipes and feels he failed? In this book, Paulo Freire starts from these questions to rethink the role of literacy methods and, more generally, of specialized knowledge, which usually occupies the ideal place of "must be" instead of being another tool in the educational process. Through dialogue with colleagues and students, Freire explains the scope of methods for teaching literacy, which are essential but insufficient. Because what is at stake is not only that children learn to read, but that they develop their capacity for knowledge and creation of meaning. To consider technique as something primordial is to miss the objective of education: the reading of words is a necessary step to open oneself to the reading of the world, and to writing and personal creation. The technical-scientific training of educators is only important when it allows them to think and decide without preconceived formulas on decisive questions: how to accompany the passage from orality to writing, how to ensure that the written word is not bureaucratized and preserves the vitality of the spoken language, how to start from what students bring to develop multiple literacies and speeches. Drawing on her own experience, she also reflects on science literacy and how to encourage epistemological curiosity, experimentation and the productive link with error.

The teacher without recipes is, once again, a fundamental contribution of Freire in pursuit of an education that goes beyond basic instruction, that offers more and more content and tools to be true citizens in a difficult world.
