Thoreau began keeping a diary at the age of twenty, and ended up filling out fourteen notebooks and a compilation that he entitled "Fragments, or what time has not gleaned from my diaries." Years later, writer, editor, and translator Damion Searls selected passages from this vast sea of words to create the most comprehensive and consistent one-volume edition ever published.
