When the menorah (the seven-branched candelabrum of the Temple of Solomon) is stolen by vandals during the fall of Rome, between the Jewish community there is much despondency. The menorah should be retrieved at any price. It then starts a legendary pilgrimage, which will also be the secret battle of justice against power. This novel tells the story of someone trying to protect this sacred object, one of the oldest symbols of Judaism. Successive avatars will make the candelabrum pass from hand to hand, moving farther away from their rightful owners. Written with the thoroughness to which we are accustomed Zweig, in that search are suffering and perseverance, in a story that, to boost the legend, love ends up being a problem.
