In the mid-14th century, the drama Dojoji, of uncertain authorship, was written based on a medieval legend. A dancer fell madly in love with a monk at the temple named Dojoji, who did not reciprocate her feelings. The woman went to the temple, and an uncontrollable resentment took hold of her; she then transformed into a hideous serpent.

Only actors who have obtained authorization from the masters can perform this play, as it is considered necessary to possess great stage presence to subtly convey the psychological changes of the protagonist of Dojoji.

Noh theater is a Japanese cultural expression that originated in the 14th and 15th centuries under the patronage of samurai rulers. With few actors, minimal set design, rich costumes, and sophisticated masks, Noh theater creates an atmosphere of mystery in which dramas of universal value are performed. A repertoire of approximately 250 classic plays has been preserved, of which very few have been translated.
