"Traditional Tales of Japan" brings together a selection of historical legends, mythological narratives, and folk tales collected by Richard G. Smith during his time in Japan during the Belle Époque. Through its pages, we journey through a magical Japan: ghosts and specters; underwater kingdoms; unrequited love; trees and rivers inhabited by Shinto nature gods; stories inspired by the strict code of samurai honor; and tales nourished by Buddhist teachings and the Zen spirit.
