Ataka tells the story of the persecution of the historical figure Minamoto no Yoshitsune (1159-1189) at a border crossing in Kaga. Despite his heroic military victories, his half-brother Yoritomo, leader of the Minamoto clan, has ordered his death. The protagonist of the drama is Benkei, Yoshitsune's loyal companion, with whom he shares adventures until death. His performance to deceive the border guards by posing as a monk raising funds to rebuild a temple is one of the most famous Noh recitals. This play inspired filmmaker Akira Kurosawa for his film Men Who Walk on the Tiger's Tail.
