Film theory is in crisis. Likewise, at present, the dominant psychoanalytic paradigm is disputed by cognitive and post-theory models. At bottom, there is a broader crisis in cultural studies, particularly regarding the public role of the politically engaged intellectual. In this new study, Slavoj Žižek challenges both cognitivist-historicist accounts of cinema and conventional film theory. Arguing that the reading of Lacan's operative in the 1970s and 1980s was particularly reductionist, Žižek asserts that there is “another Lacan”, in reference to whom film theory, cultural studies, and critical thinking as such can be transformed and revitalized. Thus, we find in this book a great contribution from the "Ljubljana giant" who amplifies these arguments with an extensive reading of Kieślowski's work and, in a substantial appendix, with a discussion of the relationship between Christianity, clinical structures and progressive digitization of our world.
