Ordained Buddhist monk at eight years old, was named Kelsang Gyatso, meaning "Ocean of Good Fortune '. Later, after eighteen years of monastic education, he earned the title of Geshe, which means 'spiritual friend' or 'Spiritual Guide'.In 1959 he left Tibet along with thousands of compatriots in the direction of India.
